As I watched in horror as Notre Dame went up in flames, I couldn't help but wonder what would remain and what would be lost from its eons of art and architecture. Miraculously, much survived. Regardless of how carefully we conserve the authentic treasures of our cultures, it is often circumstances beyond our control or imagining (fires, floods, earthquakes other catastrophes)that determine what survives. How they are interpreted thousands of years later are as much acts of faith as of knowledge.
